Bhai Takht Singh of Ferozepur (1862-1937)

Updated: Mar 13, 2021

The 'first' Jinda Shaheed (or living martyr), a pioneer in Sikh female education whose school, the Sikh Kanya Mahavidyala still exists to this date.

Bhai Takht Singh (1862-1937)

The problems he faced in establishing and running the school were vast and forced Takht Singh to often undertake arduous journeys around the world to raise funds to continue the institution's existence.

In pursuing his goal to educate Sikh women, Takht Singh was clearly aware of the immense difficulties he would suffer. When asked about these, Takht Singh is alleged to have replied, 'I am ready to suffer any trouble while walking the path of righteousness. Jail, death, even dishonour, would not keep me back from the true course'.

Though as a collective, our morale has seemed to become weak with ever-changing scenarios and the increase in socio-economic problems facing the Sikh Homeland. However our predecessors have continued to keep the light of righteousness glaring brightly and with each passing day, our morale grows stronger.

Our predecessors have led their life's according to gurmat and have always led pious jeevans. As sons of the Khalsa, we must always remember those who have perished completing noble acts; stood their ground until their last breaths so we may now live 'free lives'.

'No force on Earth can stop an idea whose time has come'. - Victor Hugo
